Unexpected Experts, Coaching lessons I learned from Middle School Students

I am always learning new things, and feel it’s a gift to stay “teachable”. Here’s what I learned from the students I tutored last semester; 1) Submit & forget - When creating any “content” work for my coaching, I sometimes procrastinate, and want to keep editing my work until I think that it’s perfect. This “delayed thinking” is deadly for me, because I will never be perfect , and to hold on to my work is counterproductive. I didn’t realize I was doing this, until I saw one of my students doing it while working together. After finishing her essay one day, she delayed turning it in. Her work was fine and done well, so after I inquired we discussed it. She said that she had been criticized before from the same teacher, and was afraid of “not being good enough”. After validating her fears ( as they had merit), I expressed the importance of turning in her completed work, no matter what anyone thought. In this way, she could focus on her other assignments, and have this paper o...

Love, Letting Go of Negative Emotions

Emotions are conscious mental reactions (such as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feelings usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body.” Adapted from Merriam-Webster 2024 Why is it so important to acknowledge our emotions as visitors & let them go? By working through these emotions and feelings, we are able to recognize, and process them ( let them pass through our system) then let them go. If we ignore or deny our emotions that doesn’t mean that they will simply “go away”. For some of us this can possibly work for a short period of time, especially if we push them so far back into our minds ( the closet of our bodies). Pushing our emotions away can only work for so long, because once that feeling is awakened and activated, it can come back out in full force. Over time, negative emotions that are stuck with us can cause internal illnesses or depression. In order to move th...

Create "The Power of just showing up"

Showing up: being present & available, coming forth, emerging, maintaining presence, availability, readiness, arrival. By the act of “just showing up” one has already performed half of the job / commitment / appointment / making an appearance / showing one’s face / approaching / entering / rolling in / attending / presenting one’s self / checking in / making it / turning up “If I show up, my Higher Power shows up with me” By simply “Showing up” the power is in my presence. Once presence is established, I’ve executed the act of just showing up, I’m is halfway there. This can mean a job, date, visit, dinner, work, interview, meeting, school, or literally almost anything. Once I “show-up” for something, or someone, I have done the footwork, and can now just let things unfold. This is that moment when I can let my higher power step in and take over. So many times, I’ve put so much pressure on the act of “just getting there”. Now I know that once I’m there, I am OK. ...

Love / How in the world can I become my best self?

With almost every prayer I say, I ask for guidance and for God to help me become a better person. Will I ever achieve the goal of becoming my best, highest self? I think maybe not…personally life has been a series of two steps forward, and then a step back to the person I am slowly unbecoming. Sometimes that “step backwards” is huge. Becoming my best self has involved a process of “unlearning” old behavior that has been a part of my life, and no longer serves me. I hold no blame and I am grateful for the “lessons & opportunities” I have had. I chose this path before I was even born. My “best self” watches over me and waits patiently by my side, gently guiding me, and sometimes whispering in my ear. It never leaves me, continuing to move me forward even when I am not listening or seem to be lost in my own fog of doubt, fear, or shame. I know that if I am quiet enough, if I allow myself time & space, then my best self can take my hand and walk me onward and forw...

Love / Hiking at Griffith Park

Driving into Griffith Park, I suddenly remembered the years ( over twenty) that I have been an avid hiker, and the amazing physical, mental, and social benefits of this low-impact form of "exercise”. I chose an easy basic trail, and parked near "The Merry-Go-Round". After the initial muscle stretching uphill pace, the trail settled into a slow and steady path that curved and climbed with amazing scenery throughout. One ofmany beautiful things about this park is that there are over 4,300 acres to explore. Taking a hike there can be slow and steady, or it can be a cardio blast at a fast uphill pace. It’s your choice. As I reached "Five-Points", a flat resting area where the trails go in five different directions. I headed for my right and choose a trail headed for the "Helicopter landing Pad". A rush of good feelings hit me, and I kept heading up, up, avoiding large rocks, and keeping my eyes open for snakes and lizards. Once ...

Love / Prosperity

What is Prosperity? The definition from “Oxford Languages” tell us that Prosperity is “The State of being Prosperous”, and one of the true meanings of Prosperity can mean: “The condition of being successful or thriving” For myself, Prosperity is about having happiness & health, along with wealth, as these 3 conditions support each other beautifully. No matter what’s going on in our lives, we can have that, and many of us already do without realizing it. We are born pure, a clean slate that becomes imprinted from the moment we take our first breath. We become disconnected, and our “clean slate” can and often does get imprinted with negative beliefs and thoughts that can keep us from our true source. The capacity of prosperity, deep joy, and health is within us, but how can we take hold of it and keep it on a day-to-day basis? 1). Awareness: This means taking a real & true look at one’s-self, life, and conditions. Writing it all down can really show us what we are dea...
